Punta Tombo penguin massacre: Conviction upheld on appeal

A Court of Appeals is the city of Trelew in thee Argentine province of Chubut upheld this week the conviction of Ricardo La Regina, a cattle rancher found guilty of environmental damage and animal cruelty for using heavy machinery to open a road in a protected area, causing the death of 240 Magellanic penguins and destroying their nests in the Punta Tombo reserve.

Brazil accounted for most of the world's forest fires last year

Brazil topped the world last year in forest fires, accounting for 42% of the global loss of primary tropical forests. The extreme heat of the year, exacerbated by climate change and El Niño, intensified fires, which destroyed more forest than agribusiness activities for the first time. The worst drought ever recorded contributed to a sixfold increase in fire-related deforestation compared to 2023.

Ecological overshoot reported in Chile for the sixth straight year

The Global Footprint Network (GFN) monitoring ecological developments reported that Chile has exhausted its annual natural resources by May 17, 2025, technically known as an “overshoot,” thus becoming the first South American country to do so this year. If global consumption mirrored Chile's, 2.7 Earths would be needed to sustain it, the organization argued.

Brazil: MapBiomas reports 32.4% decline in deforestation

Brazil saw a 32.4% decline in deforestation, with five out of six biomes experiencing reductions, MapBiomas -a network of NGOs, universities, and technology companies- reported this week. The Atlantic forest remained virtually stable -a 2% increase- while the Pantanal, Pampa, Cerrado, Amazon, and Caatinga all saw decreases.

Lula announces sizeable Chinese investments in infrastructure

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced Monday that Chinese investors would be allocating some R$ 27 billion (US$ 4.69 billion at the current exchange rate) to infrastructure and other development in the South American country. He made those remarks during his participation in the Brazil-China Business Forum in Beijing. The investments will also cover the areas of education and technology, it was explained.

No injuries or damages reported as strong quake hits Strait of Magellan region

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck the Drake Passage Friday, triggering a tsunami warning for Chile's Magallanes region and Antarctic Territory. Chile and neighboring Argentina carried out preventive evacuations, relocating thousands from coastal areas. Shortly after, a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake hit Puerto Williams, followed by a 6.1 aftershock in the Strait of Magellan. Falklands, the size and maturity of Loligo squid forces closure of fishing season

The Falkland Islands Government Fisheries Department has confirmed that the Loligo fishing season has closed. The season closed on Sunday 27 April. Following issues with the second season in the last two years, the first season was closely monitored, particularly with regards to size and maturity of squid being caught.
